Busitema University has appointed Prof. William Bazeyo as the chairperson of its 5th University Council, in yet another milestone undertaken by the institution. His profile defines him as a very distinguished physician, public health specialist, academic, and researcher, so his experience and expertise place him at the front in taking up the challenge in this new chapter unfolding at the university.
Prof. William Bazeyo is remembered for a great deal in academia and public health. Among other illustrious careers, he served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration at Makerere University from September 2017 to October 2020. He was also the Dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health for 8 years during which he engineered public health education and research in Uganda.
With a general practice and public health background of over twenty years, Prof. Bazeyo has championed a number of efforts that are aimed at enhancing better health outcomes across Africa. Most noteworthy was the establishment of the Higher Education Alliance for Leadership Training for Health in 2005, where he played a key role. This is a group of seven schools of public health from six countries that banded together to advance leadership training in the health field.
Of importance, Prof. Bazeyo is committed to public health in his service to the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa. He has greatly supported the government in developing and maintaining the capacity for regulating tobacco use on the continental level. His work has impacted tobacco control policies and public health strategies in terms of durability in several African countries.
It is, therefore, to this end that the visionary leadership and the great experience of Prof. Bazeyo should be brought forth to Busitema University with his appointment as chairperson of the University Council. His coming on board confers weight on the fact that Busitema University is finally on the course of calling a spade a spade and upholding the tripartite concept of excellence in education, research, and community engagement. The university is poised under his able leadership to grow and develop further in making its share of contributions toward higher education in Uganda and beyond.
Busitema University, being of high academic virtue, shall benefit a lot from the leadership of Prof. Bazeyo through this appointment. The appointment testifies to the high ambition of the university to remain at the top in terms of educational innovation and leadership in public health in the region.
