Makerere University introduces an electronic application system for students who are to be sponsored by the government, starting with the class of 2025/2026. This announcement was made by the Academic Registrar, Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, in regard to the overhaul of the old PUJAB forms into an electronically simplified one.
Introduction of the Academic Management Information System (ACMIS)
Called the Academic Management Information System, this new system will now enable school administrators to give all the necessary details of those students who want to seek government sponsorship in public universities and other tertiary institutions. This move is likely to revolutionize the application procedure since the records management of the applicants will be made much easier for both the students and the university administrators.
ACMIS Implementation Timeline
Makerere University has thus developed a very elaborate rollout plan to facilitate a seamless transition into the new system:
- Virtual Awareness Meetings (1st to 4th October 2024): The university will conduct an online virtual meeting through Zoom with school administrators to create awareness about the changed application process.
- Regional Physical Meetings (14th October to 4th November 2024): Makerere will conduct in-person meetings across various regions to train administrators on using the ACMIS system effectively.
- Online Application Process PUJAB (4th November to 31st December 2024): The actual application period will be availed from early November to the end of December 2024. It is during this period that applicants will make their application details available via the ACMIS portal.
Application Fees and Payment Process
Each applicant is charged a non-refundable application fee of UGX 52,000. The applicant’s payment will be by a pay reference number PRN acquired from the ACMIS portal. The payments are to be made at any bank affiliated with the Uganda Revenue Authority-URA. All applicants are advised to make this payment before proceeding with their applications.
Support and Resources for Administrators
The university will be sending Zoom links, user guides, and other support information to the school administrators via the contact details that have previously been provided. This is to ensure that all administrators are empowered in the use of this system to guide students through this transition smoothly.
Looking Ahead
The newly introduced system, ACMIS, therefore, symbolizes modernization for Makerere University and generally for higher education in the country. The digitization of the application process at the university implies, among other benefits, the creation of room for efficiency and minimizing excessive paperwork, thereby making it far more user-friendly.
