The businesswoman and real estate mogul, Fancy Nirere, has today declared her bid for the forthcoming by-election to replace the late Hon. Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, the former State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, which becomes a subject of interest in the Kisoro District. Ms. Nirere will contest on the ticket of the ruling National Resistance Movement, saying she wants to come with a different approach to the role.
The former State Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority, Nirere, who hails from a family deeply entrenched in the Kisoro community, pledged to continue doing what was started by Hon. Mateke. “The people of Kisoro District have assured me of their full support. I am determined to carry forward the vision she championed,” she announced. Her candidature also comes at a time when the NRM and the Electoral Commission are about to outline the roadmap for the election, already a subject of much debate in the region.
The death of Hon. Mateke has left a big gap, which different leaders and the commoner have their views on how he should be replaced. Some feel that the candidate must come from the family of the late Mateke, while Nirere’s candidacy represents a generational shift toward fresh blood and new ideas, hence attracting a following among people who crave changes in representation.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong assured them of their commitment to a free and fair election process. “The NRM will not limit this opportunity to a family member; we want to ensure the people of Kisoro have the freedom to choose their representative,” he said, trying to address concerns from various stakeholders.
Nirere is a proud graduate from Uganda Christian University, holding a double major in Social Work and Social Administration, and Physiology, plus various certifications in real estate management. Born and raised in Kindadari Trading Centre, Murinzi Village, she epitomizes the hopes of the younger generation, presenting herself as a vibrant candidate with fresh ideas much needed at the forefront.
She launches her campaign with the hope of galvanizing the people towards addressing matters that have been ailing the district. Her candidature has come at a very important moment when the people of Kisoro are about to elect a representative who will see their interests and aspirations through in the face of change. Indeed, Fancy Nirere will have a real impact on this election, given the amount of energy and commitment she brings to it.
