Makerere University second year student, Rachael Musiimenta pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying and Geomatics has been announced winner of the 2024 United Nations DRR Art Competition. Organised by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR Regional Office for Africa the competition empowers the youths as active protagonists in advancing resilience through creative expression.
Musiimenta’s winning art titled “Chords of Hope” was inspired by the tragic collapse of Kitezi landfill in Uganda. Her artwork brings to light the most critical issue: waste management and education in building resilient futures. A deep commitment to environmental conservation and the investigation of Uganda’s varied landscapes form the core of her theme here.
She will be attending this AfRP-9 in Windhoek, Namibia, between 21 and 24 October 2024, as a recognition of this achievement. The platform brings experts and policymakers deliberating on disaster risk management in Africa.
This is a competition run to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, pulling in more than 250 entries across the continent. With its theme being “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future,” young artists were called upon to reflect on how their generation could contribute toward a more resilient world.
