Makerere University is preparing to witness the reopening of its iconic main building, popularly referred to as the “Ivory Tower.” Damaged by fire in 2020, the official opening of this building is expected to take place on 2nd October 2024 in a ceremony presided over by President Yoweri Museveni.
Over the years, this building has remained the identity of Makerere University in terms of its rich heritage and academic excellence. Its restoration was eagerly awaited by the university community and the nation at large. This represents not only the physical reconstruction of an important structure but also the determination and resilience of the university to preserve its legacy while forging ahead.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, assisted the Chairperson of Council Lorna Magara in providing the necessary leadership, which ensured that restoration was timely and successfully completed. The renovated complex shall remain an administrative hub of the university with an architectural design from olden days blended with modern facilities. This fusion of the old and new is in a position to augment the mission before it, that of advancing knowledge and education on the continent.
The reopening of the main building part of wider initiative by Makerere University to renovate its facilities and offer a more decent learning environment for both students and staff. Other events that characterize this October 2nd event include the commissioning of a new building at the School of Law and completion and ongoing renovations of the Lumumba and Mary Stuart Halls of residence.
Renovations of such facilities at Makerere University show that the institution is not relenting in efforts to remain among the best in Africa, guaranteeing world-class education in a sustained environment of innovation and excellence.
The university fraternity, alumni, and all stakeholders await the opportunity to celebrate in an era that ushers in a new chapter in the storied history of Makerere University.
