Makerere University has been admitted into the Global University Academy, a coalition that pulls together 20 institutions from both the Global North and South. It affirms Makerere as the second African university admitted into this prestigious alliance.
Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs at Makerere University expressed the excitement of the University about this opportunity, noting that it aligns with Makerere’s commitment to socially inclusive education, diversity, and collaboration. He noted that through this coalition, Makerere is now able to assist in developing holistic educational solutions for refugee communities.
The Global University Academy emerged out of a very determined need for better programming and support services for higher education among refugees. Its aim is a universal model of higher education which would support displaced persons in different contexts.
This will be after a workshop in June 2024 at the University of Oslo, which shall bring together universities in Africa, Europe, and North America. The initiative will act as a supporting network in cases of refugee crises and will develop some educational resources for the refugees long-term.
For the next 18 months, the partners will be working together in the academy on the development of a foundation and bachelor’s degree framework, building common course recognition, forming local partnerships, raising financial support, and ensuring quality assurance. This new partnership further cements Makerere University’s position in providing meaningful educational solutions to communities in most need.
