The former Guild President of Makerere University, Robert Maseruka, is out on bail following his arrest in the recent protests by youths demanding an end to corruption at Parliament. Maseruka’s release follows intense defense by the President of the Uganda Law Society, Bernard Oundo.
Details of Arrest
Maseruka was arrested on the evening of 23rd July by security operatives outside the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court. The activist was arrested while actively participating in what is called the “March2Parliament” protests, mobilizing many young Ugandans to demand accountability and transparency from the government.
Hearing of Bail
In court, it was Bernard Oundo who led a team of lawyers to argue for Maseruka to be granted bail. The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has granted him bail at a cash bail of Shs. 100,000 and a non-cash bail of Shs. 500,000 for the sureties, hence allowing him to be out as the hearing continues in court.
Ongoing Protests
The youth-led protests, fronted under #March2Parliament, are likely to persist as the demonstrators leverage social media for coordination and amplification of calls for reform. Maseruka’s release is likely to energize the movement and further discourse on corruption and governance in Uganda.
