There was unrest characterised by students clashing with the authorities that rocked Kyambogo University amidst the ongoing guild elections. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka, warned students engaging in disruptive protests of stern action, saying external political players are allegedly influencing tensions.
Confrontation incidents have been increasingly turning violent, with police being called in to try and restore order, teargas, and pepper sprays used to break up the demonstrators. In a declaration, the Vice-Chancellor announced that actions by some students said to have physically attacked their colleagues and disrupted classes would not be tolerated at all. He assured the public that the university was doing everything needful to ensure that peace returns to the campus for a conducive learning environment.
Students have been called upon to desist from the violence, with Prof. Katunguka reminding them that the university will do all it can within the law to protect the campus community.
