Kyambogo University guild elections have taken a dramatic twist after three presidential candidates were kicked out of the race on allegations of forging documents presented during their nominations. The candidates include Bwete Tonney, an Independent candidate; Suubi Isaac, also an Independent; and Akiso Benjamin, a National Unity Platform-leaning candidate.
This was announced by the university’s electoral commission, chaired by Chairman Sembatya Axam, in a statement dated 14th October 2024. Sembatya informed of their disqualification, basing on Article 17, Clause 3a, vi of the guild election regulations where the documents that supported their candidature were forged.
“I hereby, under standards of Article 17 clause 3a (vi), withdraw the nomination of candidates; Suubi Isaac, Bwete Tonney and Akiso Benjamin for Guild presidency since their nominations were supported with forgery in order to support their candidature,” the letter said.
The disqualification came after a petition was filed by Hillary Mangeni Boro who challenged the trio’s documents and after commission inquiry into the matter.
The disqualification brings a new twist in the guild race as students at Kyambogo University go to the polls this Thursday, October 17, 2024. These elections will mark the emergence of the 21st students’ guild government, replacing the incumbent leadership headed by DP’s Reagan Mwebasa at the helm of the 20th government.
The forthcoming polls will now, therefore, take place without the disqualified aspirants as students have to choose between the remaining contenders for the hotly contested guild presidency.
