The Higher Education Students’ Financing Board has issued the list of beneficiaries under the 2024/25 Students’ Loan Scheme.
Of the 6,661 applicants, only 1,838 students-27.5%-were granted loans due to prevailing limited resources.
CPA Michael Wanyama, Executive Director of HESFB, noted the continued commitment of the board to inclusion, with 29 Persons with Disabilities being among the beneficiaries.
This year’s milestone increase was in female beneficiaries, standing at 43 percent of the total recipients-the highest number to have benefited from the scheme since its inception.
Hon. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, the Minister of State for Higher Education, noted that this was evidence of the government’s commitment to gender equity in education.
He said the scheme is an important intervention to help students make a successful transition into higher education, while confessing that funding levels-that remain very limited-constrain the reach of the program.
Despite these challenges, HESFB is committed to the continued improvement of the scheme and to continuing to press for an increase in funding to be able to support more students in the future.
