City lawyer Male Mabirizi has challenged Cavendish University to avail proof that musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine attained all the academic requirements for his Bachelor’s degree in law. The challenge by Mabirizi is based on allegations that Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, engaged in examination leakage.
Mabirizi challenges the authenticity of Bobi Wine’s degree, saying the politician may have hired someone to sit for his exams in law. He has ordered Cavendish University to produce all examination scripts related to Bobi Wine for verification whether such is his handwriting and responses.
The rows over Bobi Wine’s law degree escalated with claims of academic malpractices. The allegation against Bobi Wine, as indicated, is not the first in academic fraud; he is supposed to have a record of similar cases, including forging his way into Makerere University to pursue a diploma in music, dance, and drama.
Bobi Wine’s career as a lawyer started at the International University of East Africa, and after quitting to join politics, he completed his course at Cavendish University. One of his lecturers then at IUEA, Lewis Rubongoya, was appointed secretary general of his political party, the National Unity Platform.
The challenge has sparked debate on social media, with some netizens questioning whether or not Bobi Wine indeed holds a law degree, or if he probably got it through improper means. Critics indicate Bobi Wine’s chock-full political schedule and raise questions about his availability to meet up with the academic commitments, including attending classes.
On their part, allegations at Cavendish University are defended by its Vice Chancellor, Dr. Olive Sabiiti. According to her, Bobi Wine, like any other student, had to fulfill his academic requirements such as attending classes, passing the assessments and exams, going for internships, and working on research projects.
The controversy continues amid public scrutiny over Bobi Wine’s success in academia and how Cavendish University handled the allegations.
