If there’s one technology that defines the 2020s, it’s AI. From its behind-the-scenes impacts to its forefront in narratives, today’s film is about a world standing on its edge.
The story unfolds after an AI rebellion led by Harlan, voiced by Simu Liu, devastates Earth, leaving destruction in its wake. Enter Atlas Shepherd, played by Jennifer Lopez, whose personal connection to Harlan drives her mission against his lieutenant, Casca Vix.
The Mech:.
The movie starts off intriguingly but trips on its own feet. The exposition dump—as little as it is—in the first few scenes really makes it difficult to connect with characters early on. Once past the initial ambush scene, Atlas really picks up as an interesting character drama. Jennifer Lopez excels especially in scenes with Smith as her character juggles through complex alliances and strife.
Harlan.
Simu Liu does a great job as an interesting villain, but the film underutilizes some other potential where Mark Strong’s character was concerned. While the screenplay leaves much to be desired, the general production quality holds up with cool mech designs and planetary vistas reminiscent of Genesis Planet.
Final Verdict:
Atlas takes a little time to find its rhythm, and it stumbles out of the gate but redeems itself in a more engaging second act. It’s a mixed bag; at times, it is interesting, with little coherence to the message. Jennifer Lopez gives star power in its cast but might not be enough to save this streaming flick from feeling like a rip-off.
