Makerere University has launched a new scheme called the Student Work Scheme, aimed at offering part-time employment to students. The university council established the scheme as a way of aiding students with financial difficulties and gaining work experience that will enable them to get employed later on in life.
The scheme selected students of 20 posts of Hall Attendants to enable the students to generate an income while continuing their studies. Such positions will be flexibly designed so that students can balance their work duties with their academic responsibilities.
The Student Work Scheme is an important element within the general preparation one undergoes at Makerere University to cope effectively with life outside of academia. This calls for students to seek practical work experience during the course of university education, which would prepare them with relevant skills and knowledge for the job market.
This morning, the newly appointed Hall Attendants attended an induction ceremony conducted by the Coordinator of the Student Work Scheme and the Warden of Mary Stuart Hall. At the induction, the students were informed about their working responsibilities and how to manage their time between work and academics.
The initiative is, therefore, a positive step toward enhanced student support and development at Makerere University. It shall offer a chance to students in getting hands-on experience while building their career pursuits academically and professionally.
