In a historic occasion, Makerere University has installed a new Chancellor, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, replacing Prof. Ezra Suruma in an occasion held at the university’s main campus on 2nd October 2024, ushering in a new beginning for Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious institution of higher learning.
Dr. Kiyonga, a former Minister of Defense and experienced politician, expressed his immense gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his appointment to that position. Speaking, Kiyonga promised to cement the relationship between Makerere University and the government, as well as with the native people, through the influence of education on national development.
Of importance, the ceremony was further marked by the unveiling of the restored Ivory Tower by President Museveni, the iconic administrative building of Makerere University that was razed by a fire in 2020. The building has been fully restored to its former glory and stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for the university’s future.
In attendance were dignitaries, including the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs. Janet Museveni; the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo; several government officials; university staff members; and students.
This was a momentous occasion during which Dr. Crispus Kiyonga was officially inducted as the fifth Chancellor of Makerere University, succeeding the distinguished service of Prof. Ezra Suruma, who served from 2016 to 2024. It is under his leadership that Makerere is positioned for many years of academic excellence and impact on society.
