There was drama at Kyambogo University this morning as students took to the streets to protest against a 50 percent increase in tuition fees. Hundreds thronged the demonstration protesting the increase in fees.
Situation turned ugly as the police tried to intervene with the help of teargas and pepper spray. The aftermath was chaotic, causing much disturbance not only at the university campus but also around the vicinity.
The university has clarified that the proposed hike would apply to only freshers admitted in these courses. Still, this move has infuriated the student fraternity, culminating in the planned protest.
Whereas tension remains high, the situation is fluid with constant negotiations between the student representatives and university officials. Criticism mounts over police use of force against students from quarters necessary to flag the manner in which student protests are handled and its implications on campus freedoms and student rights.
