The University of Kisubi, commonly known as UniK, is a renowned private co-educational institution along the Kampala-Entebbe road. On Friday, October 4, 2024, UniK celebrated its 9th graduation ceremony with glee. The university’s sports grounds played host to mark this important milestone for the 289 graduates who finally completed their academic programs. Under the inspiring theme, “You are the light of the world,” the ceremony encapsulated the commitment of UniK towards academic excellence, community service, and leadership development.
Graduation was thus characterized by achievements celebrated in a diverse manner at different levels. The female population accounted for 59% or 171 students of the total graduating class, while the male graduates accounted for 41% or 118 students. Accordingly, the university granted degrees and diplomas at various levels of study as provided below:
- 45 received Master’s degrees
- 7 students received Post-Graduate Diplomas
- 135 Bachelor’s degree holders
- 95 Diploma recipients
- 7 Certificate recipients
The graduating class was commended for their commitment and determination, with five of the students receiving recognition for attaining the highest grades in their respective faculties as follows:
- Baingana Tinka Aventious (CGPA 4.50) – Best Distinction Student, Faculty of Education
- Nakyanzi Agngella (CGPA 4.51) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Health Sciences
- Abong Ronald (CGPA 4.55) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology
- Oloya Brian (CGPA 4.71) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Business and Information Technology
- Ikulot Juliet (CGPA 4.65) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Education
The event was graced by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Bro. Mugema Deogratias, who congratulated the graduates for their commitment and perseverance. Dr. Mugema noted that the mission of the university to provide quality education was relevant and urged the Government of Uganda to sustain its support for the institution. He added that the university was continuing to provide the country with a sufficient number of graduates who can contribute to national development and increase Uganda’s competitiveness in the international arena.
The event also welcomed Uganda’s Vice President, Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. In a speech read on behalf of the president, Alupo congratulated the graduates and their families for reaping the rewards of their hard work. President Museveni praised UniK for its progress since he first officiated at a UniK graduation in 2010. He also lauded the university for its impressive performance during the 14th Higher Education Exhibition, where it ranked second in the public and chartered university category.
The president highlighted UniK’s research and innovation, commending its integrity in resource management. He pointed out that the university’s ongoing research plays a key role in advancing Uganda’s development agenda, particularly in transitioning to a knowledge-based economy.
In closing, President Museveni reaffirmed the government’s support for UniK, particularly through the Ministry of Science and Technology. He encouraged the university to continue innovating and translating research into marketable products for the benefit of the university and the nation.
Appeal to Graduands
The graduation ceremony not only celebrated academic achievements but also challenged the graduands to be agents of change in society. The theme, “You are the light of the world,” urged the graduates to shine in their respective fields and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation.
