The University Football League, one of the most highly awaited tournaments, finally got underway today with an opening fixture between Uganda Christian University-UCU and St. Lawrence University in Mukono.
This season’s league promises to be full of action, with a competitive group stage that is scheduled to run from September to November 2024. The tournament has gained momentum with 23 teams competing from universities across the country in claims for this highly coveted title.
The draw for the 2024/2025 season has pitted the universities against each other in six groups that are sure to be full of talent and fierce competition:
- Group A is led by the defending champions Nkumba University, joined by Busitema University, ISBAT University, and the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
- Group B hosts Makerere University, Kumi University, Ndejje University, and Victoria University.
- Group C will see the Uganda Christian University, Kabale University, St. Lawrence University, and YMCA Comprehensive Institute take on one another.
- Group D has Kampala University, Gulu University, Bugema University, and Kampala International University.
- Group E shall be contested by Uganda Martyrs University UMU, Muni University, University of Kisubi, and the International University of East Africa commonly known as IUEA.
- Group F shall host Makerere University Business School, MUBS, Mbarara University of Science and Technology commonly known as MUST, and Muteesa I Royal University.
They promise to give fans some nail-biting matches starting with the first round of matches, including one between Makerere University and Victoria University, while Busitema University engage IUIU and Kumi University take on Ndejje University on Thursday.
As the group stages unfold, the UFL is bound to produce electrifying matches that will keep the football fraternity glued to the action right through the season. Littered with frenzied rivalries and unfazed university community support, this year’s league has already promised a threat of talents and competition in Ugandan University football.
