KAMPALA – His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje has announced the renaming of ICUC, now Insan International University, formerly based in the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
This follows a memorandum of understanding inked with the Insan International Charity Organisation based in Kuwait State. The unveiling ceremony was part of the 4th graduation ceremony of the university, Saturday, June 29, 2024, which attracted numerous high-profile personalities that included the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Hajjat Lukia Nakadama Isanga, representing His Excellency Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of Uganda, among others. The Muftis of South Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi; departments’ heads led by Hon. Meaning:
Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, Secretary General; regional assistants to the Mufti; Govt officers; members of Parliament; members of the General Assembly; prominent Sheikhs; heads of educational institutions.
In a written speech President Museveni recounted the poor state of education prior to his government saying the entire country had only Markerere as the public university. He stressed the mission of the government to provide education for all and reminded our Muslim community of what the National Resistance Government has done by establishing two universities: IUIU in Mbale and ICUC in Old-Kampala. One advised the students to look at education as a lifelong journey and promised to give all the necessary support to ensure the continued growth of the higher learning institution.
Dr. Mubaje, over the weekend, had a reflection on the history of the university. He says in 2007, he wrote to the late President of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, to request that he grants Ugandans permission to open up a regional branch in the country. The university, then based in Libya, had opened in Tripoli after his official request. But the university had since gone through difficult times, and its existence was hanging after the ousting of Gaddafi’s government. Even after losing the set-up funds, the idea of a university did not die, thanks to indefatigable efforts from Prof. Dr. Eng. Badru Kiggundu, Dr. Edris Serugo Kasenene, and Mr. Sowedi Swaleh.
He said that in revamping the university, his administration managed to solicit support from the Insan International Charity Organisation in Kuwait and that led to the renaming of the university as Insan International University. He said this international university is going to be the main campus in Uganda and its constituent colleges are going to be the other parts of the world.
“He also gave credit to the NRM Government under President Museveni for having provided an enabling environment for the institution’s growth, the National Council for Higher Education for registering and accrediting its courses, Dr. Amina Zawedde, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, donated ten computers, and Hajjat Shania Kigoozi gave university tuition to 100 needy students.”. He urged the graduates to go out and make a difference within the realms of their knowledge, skills, and discipline. Other speeches included remarks from Dr. Khaleeb Shuja Al Otaibi, who is the head of a delegation from Insan Charity and pledged to develop the university on the international level, forthcoming. Prof. Dr. Eng. The Chairman of the Governing Council of ICUC, Badru Kiggundu and the Principal of ICUC, Dr. Abdallah Edris Serwadda, also commended the university’s progress and advised the graduates to seek further studies.
A total number of 209 graduates were awarded various certificates within different disciplines at certificate, diploma and undergraduate programmes. Among these graduates are some members of staff in UMSC.
Parents, guardians, and students represented various Muslim secondary schools.
