Soroti University is set to break new ground in higher education with the development of a curriculum for its maiden MPH program, expected to admit students for the 2025/2026 academic year. This follows recommendations from regional health experts who listed the MPH program as number one on the list, accompanied by other public health-related fields such as Health Service Management.
The university Deputy Vice-Chancellor calls for speed in the implementation of a program which is believed to greatly improve health practitioners in the region, including those from its own graduating classes in medicine and nursing. This makes a giant step towards building a complementary health sector with professionals who can ably address public health challenges in Uganda and beyond.
In addition to the MPH program, Soroti University is at the final stages of introducing a Bachelor of Midwifery course. Such expansion within the health sciences has been adjudged as strategic positioning that will help strengthen Uganda’s health workforce and improve the quality of care provided, especially in maternal and child health.
This involved a number of experts like Dr. Simon Omeke Icumar and Dr. Bonny Oriekot in the curriculum development workshop who brought in international perspectives to shape the new programs. Their contribution will go a long way in developing a solid and globally competitive curriculum.
Infrastructure at Soroti University is equally improving, with the anatomy block almost complete. These facilities are very vital in meeting the standards set by the National Council for Higher Education, ensuring that the university is fully equipped with the resources it needs for these pioneering health sciences programs.
