Renowned political mentor and student leader Roy Rugumayo goes for a second attempt at the presidency of the Uganda National Students Association. The familiar face in the student leadership space is already splashing his shadow in schools across Uganda as he gets ready to launch support for his impending presidential bid.
Rugumayo had served as the general secretary of UNSA earlier, gaining an enormous deal of experience and visibility in student politics. He is a student at Avance International University, where he serves as the Guild Speaker; he, therefore, meets the qualifications to stand for the UNSA presidency. His quest for the top leadership seat is gaining momentum, building alliances and trying to win the support of influential student delegates ahead of the December polls.
In his first shot at being elected to the position of UNSA president, Rugumayo was, only a few days to the election, ruled out of the race after a petition had questioned his student status. The setback has not deterred him, and he is now determined to leave no stone unturned as he makes his second attempt at securing the prestigious position.
In case he wins the forthcoming elections, Rugumayo will take over from the current UNSA president, Okot Francis, and become the head of the 35th UNSA council. UNSA elections are so competitive, hence an important avenue through which the student leaders are representing and advancing the interest of the student community of Uganda at a national level.
With competition stiffening, all eyes are on the campaign trail of Rugumayo as he embarks on the continued task of rallying students from the entire country, many interested in how this second attempt turns out.
