Kampala, Uganda – The territorial police in Kampala Metropolitan have arrested a 32-year-old man said to be the prime suspect in an aggravated robbery of a university student in Rubaga, Kampala.
Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke identified the victim as Arinaitwe Jackiline, a student of Victoria University and a resident of Nabulagala Zone, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
The robbery is reported to have taken place last Thursday, August 22, at about 01:00hrs. Mayanja, while in company of others still at large, is said to have broken into Arinaitwe’s residence while she was deep asleep. Armed with a hammer, the thugs reportedly assaulted Arinaitwe before stealing her laptop, mobile phone, and academic transcripts.
ACP Kituuma on Monday addressing the press from Naguru police headquarters said, ” the victim tried to struggle, which caused injuries.”.
The suspects were fleeing the scene when they bumped into a police patrol team from Old Kampala Police Station. Timely intervention by this patrol team resulted in the arrest of Mayanja Hassan, a Kisenyi-Kampala Central Division resident. The arrested Mayanja is said to have cooperated with police and indicated other suspects behind the robbery.
A search of his residence afterward produced the stolen items, including the hammer used in the robbery, confirmed ACP Kituuma.
The police claimed that investigations are still underway to ensure that all the suspects linked to the robbery are brought to book. The rapid arrest by the police shows their seriousness to ensure that law and order are observed in Kampala and that people in Kampala are under protection.
