Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) held its 13th graduation ceremony on August 8, 2024, at the opulent Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo. This was in a grand celebration of academic achievement, the first of the students’ kind, overwatched, where the milestone saw to it that 707 students presented themselves for their degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
Among the exceptional graduands was Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the dencehall artiste, whose real name is Bobi Wine, who finally got his certificate for a Bachelor of Law Degree. Enthusiastic applause and ululations emanated from every corner of the main hall when he was announced to have graduated, with the energy from the graduates and the vast crowd being felt all over the place.
It was a story, therefore, that Kyagulanyi—a popular figure in Ugandan politics and entertainment—gave his press: that his graduation got delayed because of a backlog of missed lectures. He said how devastated he felt, although it was really a very good thing, and he was grateful to have the chance to learn and be determined to plow on.
The former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Chancellor of Cavendish University, has congratulated this class for having what it takes to bring transformation to the world. Jonathan’s speech was rich in very high standards that the university stands for and the transformation potential it resides in its graduates.
The other address was accorded by the Minister of Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, to the graduands during this graduation occasion, urging them to observe professional ethics and fight corruption in Uganda. He saluted Bobi Wine for pursuing higher education but also hinted at more opportunities for him in the legal profession upon completion of his further studies.
“Upon graduation, the commencement speaker Justice Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi implored the Class of 2024 to take up transformational leadership and give back to their societies in a profound way. Her words were not lost on the graduating class; they inspired the students to lead with integrity and commitment to the service of others.”.
Dr. Olive Sabiiti, the Vice Chancellor of Cavendish University, added that the institution was rolling out three new programs for innovation-driven academics: Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Diploma in Data Science and Analytics, and an Advanced Diploma in Health Leadership and Management. The innovation-oriented degree programs state the commitment of the university to meet the changes in a rapidly changing tech-oriented global market for not leaving behind in the changing educational environment.
There was also an excellent academic performance in the names of Osekeny Luka (BBA with 4.53 CGPA), Ssenyondo Rowena Tiffany (Bachelor of Public Health with 4.66 CGPA), and Tombong Jawo (4.79 CGPA). Additionally, Biku Brenda (Bachelor of Laws with 3.90 CGPA) was the best performer in the Bobi Wine cohort, for which CGPA was not readily available as of the time of filing this story.
Cavendish University: Since its inception in 2008 and owned by Africa Education Holdings (AEH), whose Chief Executive Officer is Peter Kagunye, cements, further, the leadership position in the category of private tertiary education in Uganda. The fact that the graduation ceremony is being held at the opulent Speke Resort Munyonyo is a fitting way of extending the acceptance of Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia for his being remarkable in his support of the hospitality and private sector.
