It now looks more than a century old, Africa’s Makerere University has validated its academic lights as it fetes a flamboyantly shining star with the Restoration of the Iconic Main Building. The Main Building has since always ‘disguised’ the oldest structure into campus legacy and grander historical disposition that sailed after a devastating fire.
A Century of Excellence
Since its establishment, Makerere University has grown from a very modest beginning of 14 students into a distinguished university in Africa whose contribution to the development of Africa is unparalleled. The Main Building, the common feature in reports and photographs about the university, over time, became symbolic of the academic excellence and architectural beauty of the university.
A Dark Chapter
It seriously tainted the whole of Makerere Hill and its rich heritage. The pioneering building was partially gutted, ushering in a chance to erase the complete historical importance and hamper its functioning as the emblem of the university.
Restoration efforts
In this wake of this tragedy, the Government of Uganda and stakeholders of Makerere University promised themselves to carry out a major restoration. An amount in excess of 20 billion UGX was raised towards the cause of restoring the building to its original make. This was supposed to happen by the 2022 centenary celebrations of this building, but then came a setback that would leave an evergreen mark in the walk of restoration.
By mid-2024, the Main Building had re-assumed its distinguished form, symbolizing its triumphant journey back into greatness. This restoration is not just a simple repair job; it stands as a testimony of the spirit and dedication of the Makerere University community and friends.
The completion of the renovation of the Main Building, of course, is a significant milestone toward the revival of that very core of Makerere’s existence as an institution. It has served as a reminder of the dusty, meant Makerere legacy and pointers of remembrance to the continuous commitment of delivering the very best.
A Reason to Celebrate
Having the building restored only means that the university can go out there and celebrate the milestone achieved. For the Main Building will again arise as a reflection of Makerere University’s strength and heritage.
