One step being taken towards inclusion is that Makerere University, in addition to the continuing efforts to make the learning environment more inclusive, has announced the creation of a new disability support unit for students with special needs.
Construction of this unit will be financed by the proceeds from Makerere Run 2024, slated for August 18th. Dr. Maggie Kigozi, chairperson of the Makerere University Endowment Fund, revealed this Tuesday during a press briefing. This project, she said, is key in helping differently-abled students unleash their potential.
By building this unit, we hope to provide these students with facilities, support services, and accommodations that empower them to be the best versions. The unit is reflective of the aspirations of inclusivity – a place where all students feel valued for what they bring onboard, receive the necessary support, and are empowered to rise to their underline potential
Dr. Kigozi said.
More Accessible and Inclusive
Dr. Kigozi stressed the high need for an inclusive and accessible learning environment within the 21st century. She commented that students with disabilities go through different struggles in their academic endeavors; hence, this move serves to heighten that very support unit.
The current Guild President of Makerere University, Vincent Nsamba Lubega, replied similarly. He said that each student ought to have the possibility of thriving and participating in the university setup, regardless of students’ abilities.
Makerere University is one that has over the years remained a beacon of outstanding performance in education, in molding character and the future of many. We must do whatever it takes to ensure that every student, regardless of any special needs that some may have, grows in and gives their best amid our community,”

Overcoming Obstacles for the Differently-Abled Students
It was at this point that Grace Nabwami, the vice chairperson of the Makerere University Disability Students Association, elaborated on various challenges faced within that sector. These challenges include difficulties in accessing study materials and moving around the campus. She said the new unit would handle these issues effectively.
This unit shall be a symbol of hope, but also a declaration of our commitment to inclusivity, providing all necessary services for support, such as accessible facilities, assistive technologies, and individual support for students with disabilities,

Mak Run 2024: A Run for Students with Disabilities
This year, the theme of the Makerere University Run is “Run for Students with Disabilities,” therefore, aligning itself with the commitment of the university in supporting students with special needs. The event will be the very first since COVID-19 swept across and will take place on August 18th, 2024, at Makerere University.
The Mak Run 2024 is not only fund-raising for the disability support unit but has a wider call on raising awareness of the importance of inclusivity and support for students living with disabilities. Any person participating in the run will be contributing towards a more supporting and accessible educational environment for all students at Makerere University.
