Morning lectures at Kyambogo University were paralyzed today when a few students took to the streets to demonstrate against the new changes in tuition fees. A few students moved from lecture room to lecture room asking their comrades to leave studies and join the strike. The university has released a press release to address the situation and give the facts behind the adjustment of tuition fees.
This was disclosed by the university, explaining that the University Council had, at its meeting of April 27th, 2023, accorded approval to the increment after considering an extensive review of programs and some new ones. It had described the adjustment of fees as “moderate” and added that it would apply to only first-year students in selected programs commencing in the 2024/2025 academic year. It explained that these changes do not affect continuing students and involve only two schools because of specific requirements by certain programs.
Kyambogo University, therefore, comforted the students that the university was still operational and that all academic work and other activities would go on as earlier planned. The administration urged students to disregard the false propaganda about the increment and get down to work.
This has assured parents, students, stakeholders, and the public that the university is irrevocably committed to seeing everything run smoothly and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to learning.
Kyambogo University continues to closely monitor the situation with a view to attaining such stability and ensuring there is no disruption of activities beyond what has been experienced.
