A tragic accident occurred along the Kabale-Katuna road in Kabale District on Thursday evening when a student from Kabale University was injured, while two were pronounced dead. The motor vehicle whose number plate was not readily identified and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFM 305A, collided at about 8.00 pm in Kitumba.
The injured student was later identified to be Niwamanya Methodius, 24 years, of Kirigime in Kabale Municipality. He was rushed for medical treatment at Home Care Clinic in Kitumba. Niwamanya is a current student at Kabale University.
The victims were 25-year-old Byaruhanga Merekezedeki and 24-year-old Natwera Osbert, both residents of Rubanda District. According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman, the accident occurred due to careless driving by the driver of the motor vehicle, overrunning from Kabale town towards Katuna.
The motorcycle has been towed to Kabale Central Police Station, where it was parked, awaiting further inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles. The police visited the scene and did some preliminary investigations, with the bodies of the deceased taken to the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
