The group stage draws were unveiled on Tuesday, meaning that the University Football League is due to return for the 2024/2025 season, while this season promises more thrilling inter-university football action with a record 23 universities taking part.
Defending champions Nkumba University, who won over Uganda Christian University in the April 2024 final, have been slotted in Group A. They face off against Busitema University, Islamic University in Uganda, and ISBAT University as they seek to cling onto their title for this season after last season’s success.
Makerere University is one of the strongest teams pooled in Group B with Kumi University, Ndejje University, and Victoria University. Makerere, a university that boasts of a rich football history, has vowed to go all-out to reclaim past glory in the competition.
UCU was the runner-up last year and has this time been grouped in Group C with Kabale University, St. Lawrence University, and YMCAs. Having been close to taking the title last season, surely, UCU will seek to make amends and win it this time.
The knockout stage will see Kampala University, Gulu University, Bugema University, and Kampala International University all face off in Group D, while Group E will entail UMU, Muni University, Unik, and IUEA.
Group F has been tagged the “group of death,” given that it pits football giants MUBS, MUST, and Muteesa I Royal University against each other, with a promise of mouthwatering encounters.
As competition gets underway, all eyes are on Nkumba University as they start the defense of their championship. The season is expected to run through early 2025 with a promise of fierce rivalries and high-stakes football matches.
